Tasks are not the same as jobs

I like when thoughtful experts push back on misguided rhetoric on the projected impact of artificial intelligence (AI). Luis Garicano, a professor at the London School of Economics, explained in a three-thread tweet how people confuse tasks and jobs. His first thread is relatable to the layperson. Geoffrey Hinton, often called the godfather of modern AI, predicted in 2016 that medical schools should stop training radiologists because AI…

Deactivate this feature

I just discovered the Apple Intelligence Report setting on iPadOS 26.4 and macOS 26.4. It might have been present earlier, but I was not aware of it. The report is on by default and has a frequency of 15 minutes. I switched it off in the iPadOS System setting: Privacy & Security -> Transparency Logs section -> Apple Intelligence Report -> Report Duration -> set to “Off.

Google’s AI Overviews Can Scam You. Here’s How to Stay Safe

Beyond mistakes or nonsense, deliberately bad information being injected into AI search summaries is leading people down potentially harmful paths.

Foto fallback Friday 71

I am cheating a bit in today’s look back at my photos. I took this snapshot yesterday of some framed photos on my picture rail. Those photos were from 2004 to 2006. But I only labelled them earlier this week. For example, the one closest to camera is of my then pregnant wife carrying our son. I labelled it Womb With A View…

If you don’t need it…

… don’t enable it. That was my response to Google auto-enabling Gemini to scan and analyse our Gmail content Workspaces. Google can now use our personal data to train its generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and create advertising models without our express consent. This is not a simple case of disabling what we do not need. It about preventing an invasion of privacy to fuel corporate greed.

Standardised EV charging?

After using a few different EV chargers in 2025, I have come to one conclusion: Service providers should learn from one another so that we have a better shared experience of charging our EVs. For the record, I have used the chargers from CDG Engie, Charge+, SP, and Volt in Singapore. They have been mostly reliable in 2025 in that they charge our car when we need them to.

Pi PD?

Video source  This video makes me want to organise my own professional development with a Raspberry Pi. I have not tinkered with a Raspberry Pi, but I know that it has been a mainstay of the maker movement. That is not my domain and I am semi-retired, but I am a professional learner. The problem is real — online ads can be annoying, excessive, and intrusive.

A spectrum of GenAI use

Yesterday I started reflecting on John Spencer's blog post and focused on his breakdown of how educational research get misrepresented by popular and social media. Today I focus on parts of what he actually set out to write — a spectrum of responses to generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). Spencer suggested that there were four sign posts: AI-resistant AI-assisted AI-integrated AI-driven…
