As we reach the mid-way point of SRT’s Stage Camp, I’m really enjoying the conversations I have had with caregivers around the core purpose of our drama programme; the child’s development.

Yes, we love it when our campers shine on stage, that can be a big part for some. But we also love watching the moment to moment developments, most of which are listed in the article by Trinity College.

Let’s prescribe some drama in our lives!

Top 8 transferable skills developed through drama

Top eight transferable skills developed through drama activities, useful in other areas of a student’s academic life and beyond.

A wonderful resource supporting the value of the arts on relationships and self awareness. I literally saw this happen with adults in our leadership course this week!

“The arts foster empathy. They help students identify and process emotions.”

Social Emotional Learning

Social Emotional Learning is more important than ever in schools. Use these creative social emotional learning activities to support students this year.

The Institute for Arts Integration and STEAM

Love this article- firstly it offers great insights into cognitive development for children through arts and crafts. But this is super transferable to performing arts activities.

Mostly, I just love that it refers to the process over product as the good stuff! Again highly applicable to drama

“The process is what’s most important, not the thing they actually create.”

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”
– Pablo Picasso

Drama can supercharge self-esteem. The feeling of accomplishment when contributing ideas, being seen, creating a scene & speaking out loud with peers is an awesome source of self-worth & pride

“Self-esteem develops in early childhood when children start to experience and define their capabilities. Developing healthy self-esteem from an early age, then, is integral as it directly leads to a higher level of self-confidence in the activities they choose to take part in.”

Art in Early Education: The Role of Art in Self Esteem Development

*This article is part one of two of reflections on Art in Early Education Experiencing art as an elementary student in school is fun, creative, and fosters new learning opportunities. Art in early education not only allows for students to express themselves creatively but confirms that learning interactively is effective.

Arts Help

Why aren’t we taking the Arts as a serious contributor to a life of flourishing? Why is it so easily sidelined when it comes to prioritising policy, funding, resource and greater attention?

The evidence speaks for itself!

ARTS Blog

Thanks Edel Fahy for this article highlighting the impact of the CS arts education initiative! Recommendation 5 really resonates and aligns with the arts education work I do. Deeper partnerships are a must, and pre-service arts pedagogy with in-service PD should be embedded.

“A combined, collaborative approach between teacher and outside facilitator or artist could be further embedded into arts education policy documents…”

Julie Hesmondhalgh: We need to work together to save Oldham Coliseum

Actor Julie Hesmondhalgh has called on MPs and the government to "come together" to save the Oldham Coliseum from permanent closure, warning that depriving towns of culture sets society on a "really dangerous road".

The Stage

Arts+Education=success for all

Let’s transform education; the arts can excite, enhance and connect!

“I know people think we can’t afford to fund schools at the moment, let alone theatres, but it’s really important that both things co-exist." she said.”

Arts for Well-being.

I see first hand how a sense of belonging promotes a positive mindset!

“The arts can reduce loneliness. Loneliness is associated with lower mental wellbeing and is especially prevalent among young people aged 16-24 years old.“

How cultural learning can be used to overcome the current crisis in young people’s mental wellbeing

The positive impact of the arts on wellbeing has been discussed for centuries, if not in the terms we use today, and we now have a growing body of evidence linking participation in the arts with me…
