There are always going to be some systemic problems with unions protecting low performance over the good of their constituents; police unions are the most notorious for this practice, but many physicians also do not hold their low performers to account in a non-union environment, so I suppose there will always be tribal protective behavior. All in all, I don't know how educators can protect their rights workout unions and so their leaders will be demonized by enemies of education.

@grabe When you are opposed to free thought, reason, and enlightenment offered through a liberal arts education because your policies, when critically analyzed, lead to failure in every practical, ethical, moral, and economic metric, then yes, education and its leadership is the enemy of your failed agenda.

@jquillin When I was a 17 year old at MCRD San Diego in the USMC we were issued dress uniforms. The precision in the tailoring and fit was remarkable. Exacting standards to the 1/4 or 1/8 of an inch for trouser length and break. Precise belt buckle alignment with shirt placket. Location of badges and ribbons measured with a ruler. Snug collar and sleeves fit to exacting lengths. Shoulder and body of jackets with no pulling, bunching, or gaps. Plus the care and respect to maintain these items.
