And a bit of self-promotion if you'll allow it. I just had the best time presenting work from our @adms Ad Observatory project here at #aoir24. I overviewed the computational infrastructures we've developed over several years to enable observability of ads in ordinary users' feeds, and some very new findings that reveal the sequences of ad categories that can help to inform the impacts of ad tech on end user populations. More details here: https://doi.org/10.1080/00913367.2024.2394156 Thanks to Nic Carah for the 📷
Those of you who know me well know that I have a particular bugbear with the narrow way in which APIs and web/app ecologies are often theorised and understood in the broader humanities. Which is why it's fabulous to be in this panel with Jennifer Prybus and Mark Cote who expand conceptualisation of SDKs as a key driver of data monadologies. Fantastic work worth checking out: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/20539517241231270 #aoir24
I'm biased I know but I'm going to call it, the winner of the best @Gephi chart of #aoir24 could well be this one from @snurb, @flxvctr and team which examines link sharing behaviours surrounding Australian news sources on Facebook. Fascinating findings here, particularly interesting seeing @ABC at the centre of this map, my interpretation here is that it suggests ABC fulfilling its obligations under its charter as a key non-partisan news outlet. Interesting finding also for @theconversationau
Great start to the final day here at #aoir24 with @snurb presenting results of our @adms search experience project. Headline result here is like much other work on the topic we found a lack of evidence of 'filter bubbles'. Across ~1000 volunteers in Australia who all searched the same search phrases over a long period of time, the only change is some geographic specialisation (eg. searches for COVID reveal closely located testing results or localised news) but little other variation in rankings.
Just finished an absolutely brilliant experimental #aoir24 session exploring Spotify wrapped led by @ninavindum and @taylor_annabell. They ran us through a creative workshop they have developed to explore and engage communities in critical algorithmic literacies through the lens of Spotify wrapped. We had a local musician join us for part of the workshop playing songs while we created creative representations of our own wrapped experiences. Absolutely awesome stuff!
The opening night of #AoIR is always the most uplifting, reconnecting with wonderful colleagues and anticipation of several days of excellent research presentations. #AoIR2024
Strength to all my colleagues (inc @snurb) headed to the NSW social media summit tomorrow. I designed this handy bingo card for you so you can try to retain some humour and sanity as the inane lineup of pop psychologists try to reinvent centuries old and discredited media effects theory.
I played the role of impromptu tour guide tonight with a great group of colleagues also attending the #smsociety conference here in London. Checking out the Waterloo graffiti tunnel.
Super happy to be here at #ica24 and with a huge @qutdmrc contingent! If you're at the conference please drop through our booth in the trade hall to pick up some free merchandise, see some of our books and other recent publications, and charge your mobile devices at our fast charge station.
A big group of @qutdmrc and friends ventured over to the art museum this afternoon, obligatory Rocky steps photos and shenanigans ensued as well. #AoIR2023
