How does one make federation work. - FOSSware

If I try to log into https://lemmy.ml/c/todayilearned [https://lemmy.ml/c/todayilearned] with @[email protected] it doesn’t work. If I search for [email protected] [/c/[email protected]] from social.fossware.space it doesn’t show up. If I browse to lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] from federated instances on this lemmy there is no federated login that transits to a session on lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] . What and I missing? What is a feasible way to have a useful user experience? It seams like this stuff is less than half baked. Please assist.
