Software dev for way longer than I care to admit.
Commonplace Bookhttps://www.amykhar.dev/

My current employer laid off 25% of the remaining tech team - nearly all of them were on the backend team. The company expects the remaining front end devs to become "full stack".

I'm lucky to still have a job, but I'm sad and angry and missing having a team to collaborate with. How do I keep ending up being the last PHP dev standing all the time? It SUCKS

As expected after last night's "debate", all the commentary is just trash talking the opposition. Nobody is saying anything good about their own guy. I wish the dems would start talking about what they have to offer and not just harp on how awful the orange man is.

There's a reason people voted for him. Maybe it's time to see what people really need from the government and start offering it.

I am going to shut up about politics now.

What do you use to create presentation slides in Markdown?

I'm bored of PPT, GDocs, LibreOffice.

I want to know what you *personally* use to write slides. Why do you like it? Do you recommend it? Any pitfalls?

I have undertaken an experiment at work. I have hired a logical, problem solving, retirement aged "intern" and am teaching her to program in PHP. I am not using tutorials to teach her, but having her work on real tickets. There's way more to learn now than when I started. In addition to PHP, she's having to learn Docker, git, Jira, and Slack. My company not only let me make this unorthodox hire, but seems to think it's cool that I've done so.
I'm still chuckling inside about the idea of fixing a typo in lorem ipsum...
I have to laugh because I posted this: https://www.amykhar.dev/is-the-devil-in-the-details/ and immediately after, saw this: http://tom7.org/bovex/badness-0-knuth.pdf by following a link from @andybaio

Discoveries about API Platform

But, FB has introduced a bug where you can only see the most recent 2 or so comments, and when you click "view previous comments", it jumps back 10 years. The only sorting options available are "Most Relevant", or "All Comments - OLDEST to newest", with no pagination. BUT, it works fine on the phone app. I had previously uninstalled the phone app for privacy reasons, but had to reinstall just to be able to see what my friends are saying.
Has anybody else noticed that FB is intentionally putting bugs and usability issues into their website to try to force users to the mobile app? I don't mean mobile users - desktop users. On Halloween in 2013, I made a simple post to FB. Over the past 10 years, people have commented almost 42,000 times on the post. (to be continued...)
Are we doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past? I love the return of the Indie Web. But, I'm starting to see bloggers looking for ways to monetize their posts. Deja vu.
