my main gripe was the lack of expressiveness. if there were only *just* enough creative liberty to let him be slightly more cartoony, we could've ended up with my edit on the left

Pokemon isn't always good, but I'd argue that media produced for it has a higher-than-average quality level for a children's franchises, almost as if there's some standards at work.
