I'm sick of justifying ethical behavior in terms of profit. We use phrases like "adding alt-text brings more customers to your site" or "protected bike lanes increase revenue for local businesses."

You should add alt-text descriptions to images because it helps people.

We need to build bike lanes because it makes cities safer and more accessible.

Reduce carbon emissions because it's the right thing to do! Discussing these things in purely economic terms misses the point.

For all its faults, Mastodon is the better platform for people who care about having control over their data. It's definitely not perfect in that regard either, but at least it tries.

Also, it has GIFs and videos and polls. Based on BlueSky's dev velocity, they'll have that sometime 2032.

Quite a few people sure were surprised to learn that all their posts can be read without a BlueSky account. Especially those who fled Xitter to be a bit more sheltered from harassers and nazis.

Welp.

The past two nights I wrote a "thread reader app" for BlueSky.

The protocol is absolutely insane.

There's no privacy. And I don't mean missing DMs.

All your posts are available through API endpoints. Without any authentication. By design.

The "invite-only" thing may have you think otherwise.

Here are my last 100 posts.

I started a new position a couple weeks ago and am very happy there. It's a remote-first company but by sheer coincidence my entire team happens to live in the Twin Cities, with 2 of them less than 10 minutes away from me (our boss is in Texas lol), so we can meet for lunch anytime we want!
I haven't been here in a while but how come my Home feed is empty? All I see is this! (My followed-hashtag feeds are normal)
I took my youngest kid to bunny yoga this morning and I still can't quite believe this was a real animal 🥺

I went to my optometrist this morning. They don't require customers to mask anymore, but were happy to have all their staff wear masks, including receptionists.

After my appointment finished, I noticed that all the waiting patients had masks as well, which I originally thought was just good luck. However, the receptionist told me that every customer had entered without a mask, and within a few minutes they all either put on their own mask or asked for one from the receptionist, noticing that they were the odd one out.

This experience powerfully showed me that for many, the decision to mask or not is heavily influenced by peer pressure.

Brody was born in the shelter, mother was a stray. I adopted him when he was 9.5 weeks old, and he's been my faithful shadow for over 11 years.

He's been with me through so much, but now he has a fast-growing cancer and isn't long for this world. He's a sweet boy and I'm going to miss him so much💔

Drives me nuts when the school sends home stuff at the beginning of the school year that says stuff like, "We will have a designated snack time each day. Please send a healthy/protein rich snack like fruit, vegetables, raisins, or crackers".

First off, "healthy foods" is a bullshit term we need to get rid of. A PERSON is healthy, and ANY foods can support good heath, depending on how much and in what combinations.

But also, how are fruit, vegetables, raisins, or crackers "protein-rich"? ugh
