About Our Job The City and County of Denver is seeking an Executive Director to lead and implement the Mayor’s Vision and Strategy for the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. The Executive Director of DOTI is a member of the City and County of Denver’s executive body and is responsible for setting and operationalizing CCD’s broader vision, strategy, and goals. Denver’s Department of Transportation & Infrastructure is a modern agency focused on increasing mobility and safety while reducing congestion and fighting climate change. Their role is to plan, design, build, and deliver the city's infrastructure. They also operate, maintain, regulate, and enforce elements within the right of way daily. As the Executive Director of DOTI you will set the strategic direction and vision and lead the fiscal and operational strategy of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure to drive high impact, equitable outcomes for the City and County of Denver. This key leadership position will oversee and guide the City’s transportation and infrastructure initiatives, ensuring the efficient and sustainable development and maintenance of Denver’s transportation systems and infrastructure. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with various city departments, community stakeholders, and regional partners to enhance mobility, promote economic growth, and improve the quality of life for all residents. A successful candidate will be someone who can generate innovative and nuanced solutions to complex challenges, provide strategic vision, anticipate challenges, and assess the effectiveness of our work. We value in-person interactions. Our office is not remote. The salary for this chartered position is $195,220 and is subject to City Council confirmation. This involves analyzing data, conducting research, and identifying priorities to enhance transportation systems and infrastructure efficiency. Budgeting and Resource Management: Prepare and manage budgets, allocate resources, and monitor expenditures for transportation and infrastructure projects. Ensure effective resource allocation, prioritize funding for critical initiatives, and seek opportunities for securing additional funding through grants and partnerships. Infrastructure Development and Maintenance: Oversee the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of transportation infrastructure, including roads, bridges, sidewalks, bike lanes, and transit facilities. Coordinate with engineering teams, contractors, and relevant stakeholders to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of projects. Transportation Planning and Policy: Develop transportation plans, policies, and initiatives to improve mobility, accessibility, and safety within the city. Collaborate with city departments, transit agencies, community organizations, and the public to gather input, address concerns, and advocate for sustainable transportation solutions. Public Engagement and Stakeholder Collaboration: Engage with the public, community groups, and stakeholders to gather input, build consensus, and address concerns related to transportation and infrastructure projects. Facilitate public meetings, workshops, and hearings to gather feedback and promote transparency in decision-making processes. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant transportation regulations, codes, and standards. Stay informed about federal, state, and local transportation policies and legislation, and ensure that projects and initiatives adhere to applicable guidelines. Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Establish performance metrics and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of transportation systems and infrastructure. Prepare regular reports and presentations for city officials, stakeholders, and the public to communicate progress, challenges, and achievements. About You We are looking for candidates that demonstrate experience in the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Education: A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, transportation planning, urban planning, public administration, or a related field is typically required. Professional Experience: Significant experience in transportation planning, infrastructure management, or a related field is essential. A minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience is typically required, including at least 3-5 years in a supervisory or similar high-level leadership capacity. Transportation and Infrastructure Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of transportation systems, infrastructure planning, and engineering principles is crucial. Familiarity with urban transportation planning, traffic management, road design, transit operations, and sustainability practices is highly desirable. Project Management: Strong project management skills are essential for overseeing transportation and infrastructure projects. This includes experience in project planning, budgeting, scheduling, and coordination with various stakeholders. Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools is advantageous. Regulatory Compliance: Understanding local, state, and federal regulations related to transportation and infrastructure is important. Familiarity with environmental regulations, land use laws, and transportation policies is necessary to ensure projects are compliant and meet regulatory requirements. Leadership and Management: As an Executive Directorial role, strong leadership skills are required to lead and motivate teams effectively. The ability to manage staff, provide guidance, delegate tasks, and resolve conflicts is vital. Experience in strategic planning, organizational development, and change management is advantageous. Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are crucial for engaging with stakeholders, government officials, community groups, and the public. The ability to effectively convey complex technical information in a clear and concise manner is essential. Collaboration skills to foster partnerships with other departments, agencies, and contractors are also important. Analytical and Problem-Solving Abilities: Strong analytical skills are needed to evaluate transportation data, assess project feasibility, and make informed decisions. The capacity to identify challenges, develop innovative solutions, and address issues that arise during projects is critical. Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in relevant software applications and tools used in transportation planning and project management is necessary. This may include GIS (Geographic Information System), CAD (Computer-Aided Design), traffic simulation software, and project management software. Cultural Competency and Equity Awareness: Given Denver's diverse community, the candidate should possess cultural competency and awareness of equity issues. They should be able to develop communication strategies that resonate with diverse populations, promote inclusivity, and address equity considerations in messaging and engagement efforts. This shows just how car centric much of reporting is. Someone was killed & focus is on convenience of drivers instead of the tragedy that happened. We must do better.
