Our statement on the UK government’s demand that all content on all devices sold or used in the country be scanned, on the presumption of nudity, using a dystopian combination of age verification and content scanning. This proposal will not safeguard children. It endangers us all.

I am absolutely convinced that the most effective way to put the Big Tech AI billionaires on short leashes is to enact laws holding the firms financially, legally, and criminally responsible for the damages done by their AI systems -- just as a human in the same position would be held responsible. And this means prison for the CEOs for serious damages, AI involvement in murders and suicides, and so on. The devil is in the details of course, but if someone proposed a California Proposition addressing this, I suspect there would be an enormous amount of interest.

The flooding at the Greenford London subway station has been reduced by around 90% thanks to... *checks notes* ...a family of beavers.

After conservationists reintroduced a group of beavers into a nearby city park, the animals began building dams, and the wetlands they created now absorb and slow floodwater naturally.

City officials had been planning major flood infrastructure works, but the beavers effectively created them on their own — while also boosting biodiversity and restoring the ecosystem around them.

I think the money the city would have spent on anti-flooding infrastructure should go to the beavers, don't you? 🦫 🦫 🦫

9GW datacentre approved. I'm trying to get my head round the scale of this. The whole of the UK uses about 40GW of electricity. So this one facility is a quarter of the UK grid. In one location. I had to look up box elder county on Wikipedia. "Its territory includes large tracts of barren desert,". Right, so a datacentre that uses the same amount of electricity as a quarter of the UK. In a fucking desert. And that's before we even consider the CO2 emissions. Yikes.

The #coding and #programming industry used to be dominated by women until men realized it made good money. Until that realization, they thought it was "too boring". https://insight.balancenow.co/how-the-1980s-pushed-women-out-of-computer-science
How The 1980’s Pushed Women Out of Computer Science - INSIGHT by Balance Now

Computer Science wasn't always a "guy thing." Talented women showed promise in the emerging field of tech, but the 1980's set them back.
