@edgren "Free" VST plugin sites are the wild west for sure from what I recall. Sometimes free wasn't free. Also, questionable download sites galore.
@edgren Ardour does look cool. I never tried it. I used to have Cakewalk and fucking hated it. But I see other people hate on Ableton and say Cakewalk is the bomb. Who knows. Ardour seems to support all the normal file types. I do recall having a lot of issues with cakewalk when I tried to get third party VST plugins. Ardour says it comes with a "handful" of plugins. No idea. If theres a free version I'd try that first.
@edgren I havent checked for instrument plugins because I have a Minilab keyboard and all of their files to chose from plus my own bass and a separate interface for that. So I'm pretty set. Ableton comes with tons of drum kits, outboard effects, and instrument samples, but I haven't tried those samples. Uppbeat is what finally pushed me to do my own thing, because of the time spent going through their songs.

@edgren This one is kinda "dry," but consider it's more of an exercise where I can uses pieces of the arrangement as long background music. @edgren Ableton Live has a free version which is 8 tracks. I like it a lot. You could build music in there with nothing else probably. But I also use Minilab 3 with their sound library, that costs something. Could probably find other free plugins for Ableton Live though and do it all for nothing.
