Carrel died in 1945, in Switzerland, probably seeking a cure for whatever he died of.
He is remarkable largely for having lived an invisible life despite writing a number of popular novels. From the preoccupations of his writing we can get some idea of his character and it is not a pretty one: xenophobic, bitter, jealous of the success of others.
He is rightly mostly forgotten, and you won't see many bookshelves like this one.
Carrel was born in 1859 on Jersey, His father was also called Frederic Carrel, but the one we are talking about is Frederic Poingdestre Carrel, his middle name taken from the maiden name of his mother, Louisa Draper Carrel, nee Poingdestre.
We don't have a picture of Frederic P but there are some of his parents. This is his Dad.
