I started working at a movie theater a few weeks ago. At 95 years old, this theater was once a single room theater providing both movies and Vaudeville shows. Over time it's been converted into a fairly modern movie theater. It's certainly in rough shape at this time, but it has something special. This theater deserves better and I'm trying to start the process of getting it back to what it could and should be.
I began exploring the theater during my downtime. I climbed up into the original projector room and found advertisements for movies that came out nearly 30 years ago, a bathroom straight out of a horror movie, film reels galore, and dozens of old projectors. While discussing it with other employees, one of them mentioned that they heard there are "hidden tunnels filled with random stuff" somewhere in the building. I had a new mission to accomplish on my downtime. I checked every door, walked the exterior, and became frustrated. I started to think it was only a rumor.
Then I had an idea to check the fire exits and found a hidden room with an old arcade unit inside and two doors. One, the fire exit going outside. The other a number of long abandoned rooms and steps leading downstairs into a series of tunnels. As someone who enjoys urban exploration of abandoned places, this is such a rush. Seems when the seats were replaced 20-30 years ago, then disposed of the old seats in the tunnels. A process that may have happened more than once as I found multiple styles of seats. Zero lights down there, so it's absolute darkness, moisture galore, spiderwebs, and a few fantastic cave crickets. I'm crazy for going in there, but how often does anyone get to say that they've explored a place no one else has possibly seen for decades?

Another photo from the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. This lovely area dedicated to the company that poisoned damn near all of New Jersey, DuPont!

One more for tonight from the 1939 World's Fair, simply because it is related to the last photo. Here is the building celebrating the accomplishments of The League of Nations, as they were about to fail their main mission, preventing another World War. Great intentions, but preventing people from blindly following evil men will always be an immense challenge. I'm not sure if this is more relevant today than it was back then, but it sure feels that way.
Anyways, I will always love the name "League of Nations" way more than "United Nations". Both the name and that font definitely were carved into the foundations of comic books.

Another of my great-grandfather's photos from the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. Many countries had areas that highlighted their cultures and histories. This is a bit interesting because from what I can tell, he might have been visiting the World's Fair right as World War 2 was beginning. Granted, Italy didn't join World War 2 until June of 1940, but Mussolini was definitely in power. Fascinating seeing them have this immense display at a fair celebrating world peace.

Know what we should do? Lets go grab all your camera gear, get it into your camera bag, on your back, now go jump around and balance on some icy rocks in the middle of a stream. Oh and also, make sure you're at least a 15 minute walk into the woods so no one could hear you scream if you slipped and hurt yourself. Oh yeah, in the middle of a state park right after a massive snowstorm too. Why? Because the photos.
Stupid. I do stupid things because I don't want to be inside.
Thankfully I didn't fall. No broken camera gear or frostbite on this trip.

The Beaver Pond, a small swampy pond on the back of my grandparents property in Schoharie County, NY. I'm fairly sure that I was already sick with the flu at the time I took this photo. A few days later I was a very miserable bundle of gross. Still was a cool photo. I miss the snow.

Another shot of Piermont, NY. I swear, every night you get a different experience with the sunset there. Forgot I shot this photo a while ago and stumbled upon it looking for another photo. I need to find some time to spend a few more sunsets walking the pier.

A few years ago I found myself walking around Downtown Atlantic City, taking in some of the non-tourist spots. I found this little abandoned gas station, situated between one of the newest casinos and one of the oldest lighthouses in this country, the Absecon Lighthouse. After shooting this photo I continued walking around and found myself walking past a barber shop. Two very large guys, who were hanging outside started asked me a few camera questions and one of them told me he was having issues with his camera and asked if I would take a look. So, because I have stupid labrador retriever energy at times, I walked into the shop and figured I'd help. Thankfully he went and grabbed his camera, I took a look and found that his memory card had been accidentally locked. Flipped the switch, camera went back to working perfectly, and went on my way. Whenever I tell this story people are shocked that I wasn't mugged and had my gear taken or something worse. Not the best location, outnumbered, and walking into a secluded place. Checks the list of things you should avoid, but I try my best to follow my gut and help people who ask. Sometimes it's a 2 second act of kindness that can make someone's day. Yes, evil people walk this planet, but despite what the news tells you, they are far outnumbered by the good.
I hope those huge photo loving guys are doing well.
