We DO NOT expect to have services down for 2 hours. If all goes well, the total of all down-time should be well under 30 minutes.
5-10 minutes of this window will include a service interruption to most DEF CON online services, not just defcon.social.

We have planned maintenance on the DEF CON Forums this Saturday, January 20, starting at around 5:00pm PST, lasting probably around 4 hours.
Maintenance should be mostly complete for the windows of Monday October 2, 2023 from ~8pm PDT until ~9pm PDT.
There was one interruption for most DEF CON services including main website, forums, defcon.social and more, which lasted around 4 minutes.
There was another interruption to juse defcon.social which lasted about 3-4 minutes.
No new features added in this cycle. A potential issue for onion users with access to media store should be resolved.
An optimization for mastodon services included in a ruby rebuild.
Please let us know if you see issues.

(1) An upgrade to networking equipment should lead to 3-5 minutes of service interruption to most DEF CON Servers, including https://defcon.social/ , the main web site, media, forums, and more.
(2) We are introducing a change which should optimize speed of service, which may lead to a few minutes of odd behavior and then 2 or 3 interruptions lasting around 1-3 seconds each.
(3) We have a back-end change which affects storage, but because of media storage replication, you may not notice per-server interruptions.
(4&5) Jeff would like to include 2 feature changes, but they need to be patched and tested on a test server. We will only include these patches if there is enough time to test them. Assuming these are included, each should result in 1-3 seconds of interruptions.

On Monday, we had plans to test small changes towards support of new features, but a new version of mastodon came out last Thursday.

We had approximately 10 interruptions to service lasting 1 to 3 seconds each within the window of 8pm-10pm PDT (the announced window for testing changes.)
The results are encouraging.
It is possible *some* users of https://defcon.social/ might discover the changes applied.
Look for an announcement from @support or @thedarktangent about what just changed.
In preparation for the upcoming upgrade to Mastodon 4.2.0, and to prepare for extra services that some expect to exist with DEF CON web services, we have yet another maintenance window.
Window for maintenance and brief service interruptions: Wednesday September 20, 2023 between 8pm and 10pm PDT, we may have a few 1-3 second service interruptions.
In this 2 hour window, if each step is completed as expected, we may have a few 1-3 second service interruptions. If we encounter problems, these brief interruptions may take longer to resolve.
Hopefully, we will have more to announce in a few weeks on what this work will provide to users.
