Women, moms, women of color — talk to me. How are we doing with networking, championing our work, taking on “high visibility” opportunities, consistently shipping excellent work, building a second income stream, establishing a personal brand, navigating layoffs, advocating for promotions & raises in this weird economy?

And you know, it’s ok if you’re just kind of wading through the current cultural/news cycle fog this week.

Having flashbacks to newsroom layoffs I narrowly avoided, not once, but TWICE after being bought by a large media conglomerate 🫠

The second time, I was literally laid off — packed up my stuff in a cardboard box, accepted the thoughtful goodbye cards and left the office “for good” on a Friday.

My editor in chief called me up and offered me a *different job at the same newsroom — and I sheepishly walked back into the newsroom that Monday with the most emotionally disorienting embarrassment 😅

Some of these job descriptions I see floating around read like senior/director level stuff, but are paying mid-level/specialist salaries from 2020(??)

Is this what it means to recession? 😩💸

Me: this is such a ripoff, $20 for a flimsy burrito and small horchata??

Also me: here’s a 25% tip and 5 star google review. Support local businesses ✊🏼

Finally bought the matching family Xmas PJs this year. Am I middle class???

Listening to Maria Ressa on Colbert talk about how disinformation spread on Facebook empowered authoritarianism in the Philippines + thinking of the current mess of Elon’s Twitter has reminded me how badly we need legislators who understand modern social media to hold the Zuckerbergs and Musks of the world accountable.

7/ 💛 I still have time and nothing is wasted. I have the power to write my own narrative and my journey is not linear.

6/ 💛 I know my strengths and I will seek out spaces and people that sharpen my strengths, lift me up and make me feel *safe and *good. And I can release interactions, conversations and relationships that are anything less.
5/ 💛 I don’t need to change what others think of me in order to have permission to think of myself that way. Repeat after me: I *am a leader. I *am capable.
