@kwerb Would you care to bet money on that? Say a hundred bucks on LLMs (not ChatGPT which is just a UX improvement over GPT3) significantly changing at least one industry by 2030?

The fixes that would make mastadon and activitypub competitive are clear, it's up to the community if it wants to make space for them and actually do something to counter surveillance that matters instead of patting itself on the back for it's "potential to end the reign of monetized surveillance"

@ed In theory, and I looked into that but I can't conscionably ask anyone else to come onto my server when I am very likely going to not be able to withstand an iota of legal pressures relative to any establishment player who are at least accountable to *someone*.
And in practice, it's a non-starter for community building if everyone has to host there own server. I could just as successfully host a forum on the dark web, which is to say, not at all.
@ed It doesn't even have to be protests, it could be abortions, lgbtq+ people, kink and BDSM, sex work, etc. etc. The server owner can in fact see IP addresses too, right? If I was to start a community catering to anything the state decided against, Mastadon would be an uniquely poor decision for a platform than say reddit or tumblr or twitter where I'd see and access no such details and could not be made to divulge them.
