The word “Mistletoe” derives from the old English ‘tān’, meaning ‘twig’ & the Germanic base ‘mix’ (‘mistle’), which means ‘dung’.

It literally means ‘shitty twig’. The Oxford English Dictionary suggests this may be because ‘the plant is propagated in the excrement of birds’.
