Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties: Definitive Edition for PS4 (?)/PS5 by Limited Run Games - Lemmy.world

Have you heard of this “classic”? An old AVGN review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyaF_gCKWsI [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyaF_gCKWsI] Up: The web site’s snippet says PS4 disc that works on PS5, but the actual live text doesn’t. Maybe they’ve changed it.

So, about the gym memberships... - Lemmy.World

cross-posted from: https://feddit.de/post/3190681 [https://feddit.de/post/3190681] You’ve seen Louis’s rant about how difficult it is to cancel gym memberships. But I think he’s mad at the wrong thing here, or at least not at the main wrong thing. The worse issues, as I see them, are: The main issues are: 1) Why does a gym require membership/subscription in the first place? Ok sure, fixed expenses and stuff, but that’s the case of every business ever, and my grocery store doesn’t require me to sign up for membership to buy bread. Where I live (Europe), gyms, swimming pools and other such establishments are walk-in. You come, pay an entry fee and leave whenever. Memberships and tickets for multiple entries are offered, but it’s just to save money if you want it and are a regular anyway. So there’s a steep discount coming with those. Businesses need go actually earn your membership money. I kept seeing people joking about gym memberships in US TV shows and comedies, and just had to shake my head. Not that people aren’t trying to bring this subscription/membership rot here. One large local gym/wellness chain now requires membership and a phone app to enter. The membership itself is free (presumably you pay with your data in some way) and there are still just single entrance fees, but fuck that. 2) I’d say it’s good manners to accept cancellation of a contract by the same method as the sign-up. But in absence of good manners by businesses, laws should exist to enforce exactly this. As far as I know, Europe-wide laws require cancellation of contracts to be easily available, at least using the same way as you can sign up. So if the laws don’t demand this, and businesses don’t respect this simplest, basic logic, then there’s something fundamentally more wrong than just “making it difficult to cancel”. And overall, it also just shows how far can things get when subscriptions are just accepted as normal thing. It always gets worse and worse, unless the law intervenes (if it does). That’s why it’s pretty much best to avoid subscription services and memberships whenever there’s an alternative available. Sure, exceptions apply, but always think what the situation with your service will be in 10 years.

Do you use a stylus, or just a finger? - Lemmy.World

I find it curious that I’ve never seen a video of someone controlling their DS/3DS touchscreen with just a finger. I’ve used touchscreens on mobile devices even before the DS was out, and I almost never use the stylus, just my fingernail. Recently I’ve been on a binge of trying out DS shooters that control the aiming via touchscreen, and just using my thumb I can hold the handheld like a normal console controller, with aiming similar to having a right thumbstick. Can’t imagine fiddling with a stylus to aim, ew. And no I don’t have long fingernails, just completely normal human ones. I’m also not worried about damaging the screen - if anything, fingernails are softer than hard plastic. Am I really the only one? Made a poll in the comments, please vote by upvoting, I’m curious.

Remember what "subscription" used to mean? - Lemmy.World

The article about the “subscription” HP ink made me realise something. Subscriptions aren’t a new idea at all. You could subscribe to paper magazines. And you got to keep them. I’m just clearing up my old house and it’s filled with tons of old tech magazines. Lots of useful knowledge here. Wanna know how Windows and Mac compared in 1993? It’s in here. All the forgotten technologies? Old games, old phones, whatever? You’ll find it. Now, granted. You’d only get one magazine a month. Not a whole library of movies or games or comic books. But still, the very definition of subscription has shifted. Now, the common meaning is “you only get to use these things as long as you’re paying”. Nobody even thinks it could mean anything else. Besides, it doesn’t only apply to services that offer entire libraries. Online magazines still exist in a similar form as the paper ones. But you only get to access them while your “subscription” is active. Even the stuff you had while you were paying. BTW I’m not throwing my old magazines away. I won’t have the space, but a friend is taking it all. If they wouldn’t, I’d give them to a library or let someone take them. The online and streaming stuff of today and tomorrow? In 30 years it’ll be gone, forgotten and inaccessible.

Debate club: Big games on small systems - Lemmy.world

Hey again! To keep this place both livelier and closer to its original purpose, let’s do a little debate club / reading club thingy. For this, every month, or week, or two weeks depending on how it goes - we shall pick a game to talk about, or some other topic. We’ll do community suggestions and voting too of course, this is just a launch. So the first pinned topic: Big games on small systems We tend to think of handheld games to be smaller, shorter and simpler. But sometimes they’re quite grand on its own. From the beginning, GameBoy has been getting major games. Link’s Awakening is one of the most loved Zelda games, Metroid had a sequel on GB too. Another major source of big games are re-releases of console games from previous generations. Zelda comes to mind again with OoT. My personal favorite on 3DS is Xenoblade Chronicles, which is a really mind-blowing experimence on such a tiny system. Other times, it’s the reverse, where a handheld game is good enough to get a release on main platforms later. For many, Resident Evil Revelations was the return to form for RE, and it started on the 3DS. A game I also need to point out is GTA Chinatown Wars. I know it’s a best seller, but I still find it underrated. It may be odd, but when I’m randomly thinking of a GTA game, it’s this one. Those were good times playing GTA while waiting in my taxi for a passenger. ========== NEWS For pickups, collections, and other “look what I have/got/found” topics, there is now a single pinned thread. Lemmy makes it easy to attach an image directly (or multiple) in a comment. So don’t make individual posts for this purpose. If the mega thread fills up (I don’t know what the comment limit is), we’ll make a new one and link the history. Of course you can still make a new post if you have a question or need help with your game or gear, or it’s something to talk about beyond a single photo. (Or it’s something suuuuper cool.) I’ll update the sidebar at some point too. Thank you!
