Digital skills and apprenticeships, tech, education, probably some music. I’m trying to leave politics for the bird. I work for BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, but any views expressed here are all mine.
Level 7 apprenticeship funding to be axed from January 2026

DfE also announces 'priority' bootcamp funding for next year and confirms apprenticeship budget increase to over £3bn

FE Week

Govt. to private training providers: 'You need to give us a 3yr financial plan.'
(Provider) 'Can we have the rules for how you'll fund us?'
'Hmm. I suppose. But we'll publish them late.'
'Erm, okay. And you'll keep everything the same?' (Govt. waves hands vaguely around #apprenticeships and some new Level 2 stuff). Provider: 'Okay, cool. Here's the plan, fully costed. Phew. That was a lot of work. I'm taking half term off before we approach the Year end. As you know, that's our busiest time and I wouldn't want to put our funding at risk.'

Govt. 'Oh, and we're cutting Level 7 funding. But we won't announce that until midnight on the day after the Bank Holiday during half term.'
'Wait, what? How many people does this impact?'
Govt. '''
'Hello? Who asked for this? How may learners will it remove from the system? You only measure funding for 16-18 and 19-24 year old, so why cap L7 funding at 21? What does that mean where there are high-level skills gaps such as in #AI?'
Govt. ''

'Hello?'

Is “ethical AI” an oxymoron?

The current wave of generative AI has unpleasant side effects: large-scale copyright infringements, environmental impact and bias. For most uses today, it makes sense to me to default to not using AI.
