Privacy is not a science, it is a human right

https://ar.al/2019/02/14/privacy-is-not-a-science-it-is-a-human-right/

My response to a dangerous turd of an article by Bart van der Sloot (co-founder of Amsterdam Privacy Week – sponsored by Palantir and Google – and docent teaching “Privacy and Big Data” at Tilburg University)

Mr. Sloot attempts to reframe privacy as a “science” and shame those who work to protect it for having a “pro-privacy agenda” & not being “neutral”. He also calls for “new rules” to disallow such biased behaviour.

Privacy is not a science, it is a human right

Given the levels of institutional corruption in academia and in the regulatory bodies and advocacy institutions that should be protecting our privacy, very few things shock me these days. So hats off to Bart van der Sloot for managing the impossible and finding a new low by framing institutional corruption as scientific neutrality in his article Dubbele petten in de privacywetenschap. The gist of Mr. Sloot’s argument can be summarised with this doozy of a quote from his article1:

when I say MRF is God mode for the fediverse, this is not an analogy, it is a literal statement. MRF lets you spoof. MRF lets you bypass all security checks. MRF is the beginning and the end. this is a very powerful framework and it is very much a feature that the AGPLv3 infects modules which consume it.

George H. W. Bush lived to the ripe old age of 91 and had the best of everything in his years as a former President. He was born to wealth and privilege, but deserved little of what he enjoyed in life.

Dying in bed of old age after decades of comfort and security is a privilege most people are denied. This must change if we are to have a world worth preserving.

Okay so tumblr is banning rotating cubes saying it's porn and facebook banned saying "i'm gay" saying it's sexual solicitation and Twitter always seemed like it could disappear at any moment

I feel like we need to be getting ready for Mass Migration to Mastodon, which means we need to fix anything that keeps Mastodon from being usable, and there is in fact something that keeps Mastodon from being usable, there's one specific thing, it's this:

Support account migration · Issue #177 · tootsuite/mastodon

A lot of people seem to be jumping on https://mastodon.social right now, even though the end goal is to have users separated out across multiple federated instances. However, if people start puttin...

How I would be looking ahead if I were Google:
- The biggest flaw in Android is that it's hackable and contains privacy features that make it possible to cripple the spyware in it
- The "look but don't touch" open-source model works great, let's clamp down even harder on it
- Why don't we try packaging most of the system in nice modular binary blobs, so that things like OEM drivers, platform-specific UIs, and apps are easy to install but impossible to modify
- Also how about it tracks all of its activity at the kernel level and reports it directly to us, and you can't disable that without refusing network access to the kernel altogether
- Sure, folks will try to fork it, but that won't go well for them if the OEM driver blobs are illegal to distribute and will only work with official signed kernels
App idea: "Resource Radar" to allow every citizen to model the systems on which they depend, so we can see the obvious democratic solution to the problems we face: communism, and the democratic control of those systems

I’m so glad that Thanksgiving is over, now I can sit back with some spiced rum and enjoy some real Baltimorean Christmas music:
