I wrote about GuideAlong, a GPS audio tour app that's become essential for our National Park trips. Works offline, costs $10-20 per tour, and lets you explore at your own pace while still getting local context and history.

Honest assessment including what needs improvement:

Still have some post-holiday gatherings coming up? I was on MacVoices with @chuckjoiner a few weeks ago sharing some practical gift ideas; things like GuideAlong for national parks road trips, MacWhisper for transcription, and my "Holding It Together" bundle of gaff tape, Bongo Ties, and paracord.

Links to the episode as well as a full product list with item links and pricing are on my site:

I've been trying to make dictation work since middle school (Dragon NaturallySpeaking for Christmas, anyone?). Finally found a setup that actually works: MacWhisper for desktop transcription with Claude API cleanup, extended to iOS with WhisperMemos and a custom Drafts action.

The post includes my actual Claude prompt for cleaning up dictation artifacts and the complete Drafts action code if you want to replicate the workflow.

The holidays only really start when I break out my Santa t-shirt and venture onto camera for a change πŸ™‚

Thanks for keeping the tradition going @chuckjoiner, and it was fun to finally β€˜meet’ Kirschen and to get introduced to @TheMikeBurke

My friend Scott was asking me for some healthy links to help replace doomscrolling, and I've been sending him a curated list of joyful RSS-friendly links, and I realized I should just put that somewhere.

So here's my hand-typed, semi-curated list of lovely links: https://trave.rs/blogroll

My favorite feature of iOS 26 is getting to listen to "A-Hole" by Bowling for Soup every time I get into my car.

We are wrapping up a week exploring Indiana Dunes National Park on the shores of Lake Michigan. The dunes and the lake were way more fun than expected!

We even took the time to take a day trip to Chicago and tour Wrigley Field!

My son is a big fan of Fortnite; it's fun that we share a love of gaming and can play together. The next step has arrived, and he's starting to talk about a gaming PC.

My last Windows device was an Alienware (pre-Dell) tower from 2008. Does anyone out there have advice on where to start this journey?

We have a MicroCenter about 30 minutes away, and a stop there is on my list. I am thinking that building a PC might be a fun project.

Two years ago today, my family returned from a two-week road trip around Iceland. I'd go back in a heartbeat; it's an amazing place with so many otherworldly experiences.

One of my favorite places was Hraunfossar Waterfall. It felt like a waterfall of waterfalls with no visible source.

I don't think it's on the typical "One Day in Reykjavik" itinerary, but you should check it out if you are ever in the neighborhood!
