Deadpool, the little superhero movie that could, was released on this day (February 12, 2016)

An R-rated movie about the “Merc with a Mouth” starring Ryan Reynolds was not exactly a sure thing back in the mid 2010’s. Fans didn’t love the way the character was portrayed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and Ryan Reynolds was generally well liked but not quite considered an A-list actor at this point. My how things have changed for someone that is now undeniably one of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

Yesterday I was part of a group that peacefully protested the expansion of a coal mine in Germany. We were kettled by police and then detained but were let go later that evening.

Climate protection is not a crime.

Fact: 3 of the Top 10 highest grossing movies based on video games came out during the pandemic. Compared to previous years, new game-inspired content is getting better reviews and higher ratings. The latest example being the #HBO show #TheLastOfUs.

For more on why I think video games will be the next top genre in Hollywood, check out my latest piece. #Movies #Tuesday https://open.substack.com/pub/flipland/p/gaming-is-the-new-top-genre-in-hollywood?r=1teol9&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post

Pulp Fiction vs Forrest Gump. Get Out vs The Shape of Water. The Academy Awards often come down to two films with one being the short tern “winner” and one being the “long term” winner. I dive in on this and more as I relitigate (seems like this should be a word) with my 5 Years Oscars - 2018 edition newsletter for FlipLand. #Movies #monday https://open.substack.com/pub/flipland/p/5-year-rewind-of-the-2018-oscars?r=1teol9&utm_medium=ios&utm_campaign=post

The last time Tim Burton and the Addams Family were “mainstream” relevant at the same time was 1993. This is about 10 years before the star of #Wednesday, Jenna Ortega, was born. Check out my first #FlipLand newsletter for more on this and the dwindling connection today between box office success and earning a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards.

Everyone involved with Wednesday should thank Jenna Ortega for the show being a success, correlation between Best Picture and domestic box office success, and will people show up for Avatar 8?

When billionaires like Musk, Bezos, or Zuckerberg justify their business motives by citing “freedom,” what they actually seek is freedom from accountability.

Now seems like a good time to talk about how far-right extremists are using the Overton Window theory to force their ideas into the mainstream. The premise here is that today’s fringe ideas/beliefs can become tomorrow’s normal by shifting the boundaries of acceptable discourse. You do that by introducing people to more & more extreme ideas, so everything else seems reasonable in comparison.

eg, when “praising Hitler” becomes the comparison point, low-key bigotry suddenly doesn’t seem so bad. 1/

RIP Christine Mcvie. Her singing voice was so unique, and it is hard to imagine #FleetwoodMac ever being as successful without her tremendous contributions. Side note, her 2017 album with Lindsey Buckingham includes some pretty solid songs. #RIP
