Some people are getting triggered over Palworld

Some people are getting triggered over Palworld - Lemmy.World

Palworld is essentially Pokemon with guns. You catch animals and then force them to fight other animals just like Pokemon. However in Palworld you can make your Pals work in your camp and you sell them and kill and eat them. It’s these last two points that people are rushing to the internet to call out. You see it’s also possible to catch humans in Palworld. Once caught you can make your human do everything you can make a Pal do. Even sell them, and they’re very valuable. The game does say that catching and enslaving humans is considered inhumane in Palworld but once you ignore that message you have your very own human servant that will fetch a good price once sold. As you can imagine there are those that are getting all worked up over a game that “promotes human trafficking” and “slavery.” But they have all forgotten the most important point. They aren’t real people. You can’t enslave a video game character. Now obviously if you did it real life that’s a whole other issue but doing it in a game is not a problem. At least the police haven’t gotten involved yet unlike the case of the police in the UK actually spending money and resources investigating a rape that took place in a VR game which is just as ridiculous as it sounds. Now I’m off to create my very own human army in Palworld.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle coming to Xbox an PC this year - Lemmy.World

Machine Games finally unveiled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle during the Xbox Developer Direct and the game is looking very promising. Set between Raiders of the Lost and The Last Crusade the predominantly first person game will see Indiana Jones travel the globe to solve an ancient mystery. While the bulk of the gameplay will be in first person there will be moments of traversal and cutscenes that will pull back to a third person perspective. As for Jones himself the character uses Harrison Fords likeness and voice acting legend Troy Baker (The Last of Us, Uncharted) voices the character in a very good approximation of Fords voice. While we didn’t get a firm release date we do know that the adventure kicks off for Xbox Series S|X and PC in 2024. The Great Circle will also be coming to GamePass on release.

Despite campaigns for boycott's, Hogwarts Legacy was 2023's best selling game - Lemmy.World

Hogwarts Legacy has ended a 14 year streak of the best selling game in the US being either a Rockstar game or Call of Duty. The exact US sales figures for the Harry Potter sim weren’t released but we do know the game shifted in impressive 22 million copies globally in 2023. This all despite some very vocal members of the community calling for a boycott of anything even remotely related to JK Rowling over her opinion that biological women should have the right to protected single sex spaces such as public toilets and changing rooms. They absolutely should btw. IGN until recently included a disclaimer about the author in every article they posted about the Harry Potter universe. Did you buy Hogwarts Legacy or did you boycott the game?

Hellblade II will be a digital only release

Hellblade II will be a digital only release - Lemmy.World

Ninja Theory has finally shared more details about the hotly anticipated Hellblade II. Announced all the way back at The Game Awards in 2019 right with the reveal of the Series X itself the game will be out on Xbox Series S|X and PC on May 21st 2024 and will also be a day-one GamePass title. The game will be a short experience it will cost £50 instead of the now usual £70 but that’s where the good news ends. In a blow for game ownership and preservation Hellblade II will not be getting a physical release and is following in Alan Wake II’s footsteps and going digital-only. Developer Ninja Theory claims the lack of physical release gives them the freedom to charge less for the game however there are plenty of physical games that release at the £50 price point. The lower price is because the game is short and they know customers will not pay premium price for a short game. The digital only release of a first party Xbox game does give the rumoured digital only Series X mid-gen update more credibility though as more first party Xbox games may chose to skip the physical market. Not that most people that play it will buy it anyway as it will be on GamePass from day one. Are you still planning on buying Hellblade II now it’s won’t be getting a disc release? It was bad enough that I own the first game on PlayStation 4 and its sequel is an Xbox exclusive but for me no physical version means the game is a hard pass which a shame as I enjoyed the first game very much.

[Retro Review] Destruction Derby 2

[Retro Review] Destruction Derby 2 - Lemmy.World

There was no shortage of arcade racing games in the early years of the PlayStation. Need for Speed, Wipeout and of course Ridge Racer. But hot off the heels of the much slower paced and technically limited Destruction Derby came one of the best PS1 arcade racing games. Destruction Derby 2. Released in the UK in January 1997 for the PlayStation, Destruction Derby 2 was a technical marvel when compared to its predecessor. Gone were the slower races on flat and narrow tracks, replaced with fast paced circuits with steep hills and jumps. Psygnosis took the Destruction Derby formula and turned it up to 11. There are 3 distinct game modes, Wrecking racing, where players must score points by crashing out their opponents. Stock car racing, a more traditional race where the aim is to simply finish 1st and Destruction Derby. These events take place in arenas where the goal is to be the last car standing and also have the most points. The meat of the game are the two championship modes. One for wrecking racing and one for stock car. Each season consists of 4 races with all 20 drivers split into 4 divisions. The driver at the top of a division is promoted and the driver at the bottom is demoted. The aim obviously is to win division 1. However the higher up the divisions and your place in the division determines your starting position in each race. So the driver in 5th of division 4 starts in 1st while the driver in 1st in division 1 starts last. It sounds easy but it took me 11 seasons to win the stock car championship after suffering a few demotions. You also have a choice of 3 cars. Rookie, Amateur and Pro. The Rookie is obviously the slowest and easiest to handle while the Pro goes like stink but is like driving on ice. The Amateur is a balance of the two extremes and the car I recommend as the slightest tap of another car in the Pro can send you hurtling into a wall. The Rookie is a challenge to drive at times but not so much it stops being fun. As for the tracks they range from your basic oval to tight twisty multi-route circuits that can be tricky to survive before you even start worry about the other cars. They are all fun to drive with a mix of fast sweeping corners and jumps that if you don’t land just right you’ll be nose first into the wall. If like me you hit the walls a lot then luckily on most tracks there is a pit lane you can use once per race to repair your car. These are done manually which involves spinning the camera to the highlight the part of the car you want to repair and smashing the O button. You only get 5 seconds, do it wrong and tough luck. There’s no second chances here. Destruction Derby 2 is still one of my go to arcade racers for some quick fun to this day and is the only game in my collection I never traded in and had to rebuy. I’ve had the very same copy since 1997. It is a must play game from the PS1’s library. Reviewed on a PlayStation 3 How to play in 2024 Unlike its predecessor Destruction Derby, Destruction Derby 2 has never been released on the PlayStation store so the only way to play is to buy a disc copy and play it on a PS1, PS2 or a PS3 console. Disc copies range from £10 to £20 depending on the condition. It is also available on PC CDROM from around £10 however compatibly with modern Windows versions is likely to prove to be an issue.

Fortnite set to return to Apple devices within weeks. But only in the European Union. - Lemmy.World

After more than 2 years since Apple booted Fortnite from the App Store for violating the stores terms of service Epic looks set to bring the game back to Apple devices. A new EU law requiring Apple to allow apps to be installed from outside of the App Store comes into force on March 7th 2024 which will allow users in the 27 EU countries to install apps and third party app stores that haven’t been vetted by Apple. The rule will also allow app developers to bypass Apples in-app purchase system and offer out of app payments however Apple will still require a 12% to 27% commission on out-of-app sales. The new rules regarding out of app purchases will also apply to the United States following a Supreme Court ruling but the rest of the world be unaffected by the changes including the UK which formally left the European Union in 2020. Epic is already challenging Apples decision to charge commissions on out-of-app purchases in the US and EU however experts say this is very likely to fail as it is common practice for such transactions. It also opens the door for Microsoft to bring a GamePass streaming app to iOS devices in the EU after being blocked by Apple.
