@daringfireball This reminds me of the iPod days where pundits (“analysts” would be too complimentary) like Enderle would write about how PlaysforSure MP3 players would overwhelm the iPod because there were so many choices, ignoring that in the real world people were choosing iPods overwhelmingly.

I’m technical, but when it comes to iOS I have no interest in buying an app from a non-Apple store. If a developer uses an alternative channel exclusively, im not buying their app.

@kottke Pigs In Space!
@evankstone @daringfireball Apple specifically states that the firmware update is for the AirPods Max with USB-C, though, so I’m not sure we will get that update.
@daringfireball ah, I should read footnotes better: Lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio will be available in April as a free firmware update with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4 for AirPods Max with USB-C.
So not lightning models. Booooooo.
@daringfireball I’m not sure which, if any, features apply to AirPods Max with a lightning connector. It seems that the lossless, low latency over wired connection is USB-C only, but I wish they’d been more clear on whether other items apply to all AirPods Max or just the newer version.
@daringfireball The animations feel excessive to me. I’ve turned on the Reduce Motion setting for every release since iOS 7 and I’d almost forgotten about it. I’ve toggled it off a few times with a new release, but within a day switched it back.
@daringfireball Different point of view: I’m a technical user, I totally understand the option to download from anywhere on the Mac (and the the Mac App Store is meh). But if someone doesn’t offer their app on the App Store for iOS, I won’t install it. I don’t want to mess with vetting the install source and I want them to have to follow Apple’s security and privacy rules.
I also think people conveniently forget what online SW sites charged before the App Store: if you used Handango, they took a lot more than 30%: when the App Store was announced,30% undercut the existing channels for mobile SW significantly.
I do think there are more issues with Apple’s cut for subscriptions and especially not allowing notification of external payment options.
@[email protected] not just the AI stuff but lately just basic dictation. Ask it to navigate to “Home Depot in Colma” (while in SF) and it does Tacoma, even when corrected with “Colma, CA”. Lots of similar mistakes
@gruber thanks, they weren’t a present or anything so no problem. I think I’ve been ordering these for about 20 years.
