I would suggest looking at par files for your corruption concerns. They would add overhead both in time and space but well worth it. I checksum everything I back up so that I can verify it. And par larger files so a bit flip, or more realistically a bad sector or two (thousand) doesn’t break everything.

Are you sure that the DVD drive is a desktop 5.25 half height?
A lot of modern desktops use a laptop DVD drive now a days. That will only have room for a 2.5" drive, not a full 3.5"

Don’t have too much of an opinion on your proposed solution but I certainly got frustrated trying to figure out how to even get started the first time.
The whole process of trying to find a list of options was a PITA to begin with.
