As you’re probably aware, there isn’t a single multi billionaire owner of Mastodon.

The people running the servers are doing an incredible job coping with the massive influx of new users in the past month.

If you can afford to put even a small amount into the pot to support your instance it will help with the increased workload and server capacity.

I was explaining Mastodon to my wife and how it's different from other social media sites. I explained that I find it to be an inclusive, welcoming place. I explained that nearly everyone I follow is either gay or neurodiverse or trans or disabled. I explained that it's the first place I feel like I can actually really be myself and that people here are welcoming and supportive of me being myself. And that's why I've been so happy lately. She said "why don't you tell them that?" and I said ok!
Last week I had the pleasure of interviewing the creator of Mastodon, Eugen Rochko (@Gargron). We talked about how crazy the past few weeks have been, why the site was built to resist the kind of takeover that Twitter has seen, and what he makes of Elon's tweet poking fun at Mastodon: https://www.wired.com/story/the-man-behind-mastodon-eugen-rochko-built-it-for-this-moment/

The Man Behind Mastodon, Eugen Rochko, Built It for This Moment

People fleeing Twitter have turned to Eugen Rochko’s alternative. He says social networks can support healthy debate—without any one person in control.

Hey journalists! Mastodon is not a “platform”. Platforms were invented in the wake of the last financial crisis to consolidate power among specific companies by mining people of of their personal data for profit online. Mastodon does not consolidate, only connects. It does not amplify algorithmically, or mine people. Any “learning curve” should include reflection on why you ever accepted “services” aimed at data extraction as “natural” or even “social” to begin with. #twittermigration

So many people are having a bad first experience with Mastodon because they're using the official app which is lacking features, doesn't allow image uploads randomly, has random slowness, and doesn't give you easy access to the two most active feeds where you can find people (Local and Federated).

Please switch to Metatext, Tusky, or Tooot for a better mobile experience (or even use a browser).

Out of the >15k users that joined this week, over 11k are on the official apps.

A lengthy chat between Jon and I where we pour over a fortnight's worth of #DoctorWho news...

Strangers in Space

Broader and deeper than Doctor Who... Back in the early months of 2012 we started life as the Blue Box Podcast, a small team of three (then four, then five...) people podcasting our thoughts on Doctor Who, in the classic style of a bunch of friends the microphones were just accidentally eavesdropping on during a conversation in the pub. Over a decade later, the team has expanded and so has the remit; nowadays we publish episodes approximately three times a week, and the discussion has moved on to include any number of subjects that Doctor Who fans might find themselves chatting about during the aforementioned informal gatherings. So alongside our main subject, you'll find us talking about films, and music, and politics, and other TV programmes, and more besides - and occasionally talking to special guests about their interests too. But of course, plenty of Doctor Who. Links page: https://strangersinspace.weebly.com/links.html Where to find the hosts: https://strangersinspace.weebly.com/the-team.html

It makes me sad to see so many people saying “I’m not anyone” when introducing themselves on social media. Um, yeah, you are someone. You are you and everyone in the world has something to say and often a lot more people are interested than you may think. Unfortunately I think a lot of peoples thinking has been trained that unless you have lots of followers / you’re famous / you post controversial opinions then you’re not worthy of being heard. You are.
