San Francisco stores: We are closing because of crime! Unless you give us a huge tax break hint hint.
SF Mayor: We can't give you a tax break because we spent all our money on police. Would you like some extra police instead?
Stores: Well actually we may have been fibbing a little about the crime, which statistics show is in fact down. But we really could use that tax break.
Mayor: More police it is!

A while ago, I read about the psycholgical effect that kicks in when someone tries to fight for a good cause, but then makes a tiny mistake.

We are very hard on hypocrisy because our brains like when things add up.

I.e. a climate activist with a plastic cup triggers much harder than Elon taking a 5 minute flight in his private jet every other day.

The first feels wrong, while the second just meets our expectations.

I can't stop seeng this everywhere ever since.

Every time they show up and kill or capture a mass shooter, or they kill themseves, all the newspaper stories end by quoting the local police saying, “There is no longer any threat to the public.”

They’ve told us there was no longer any threat to the public 203 times so far this year.

I’m starting to think there might still be a danger to the public.

Well, that seems to be working well. Not.
My own theory about Clarence Thomas is that, obviously, he initially got the money because of ideological compatibility. He wasn't bribed to hold those views; he was induced to *keep* those views. The function of the money and luxury vacations is to prevent evolution of his judging; we do have many historical examples of Justices who've evolved as they've seen different things. But that won't happen if the money and luxury spigot is flowing this way.

We all get to hear plenty of updates from the stock markets.

But does everyone know that atmospheric CO2 reached 424.4 ppm last week - a new record high in human history?

Trends in CO2 - NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory

GML conducts research on greenhouse gas and carbon cycle feedbacks, changes in aerosols, and surface radiation, and recovery of stratospheric ozone.

Weird how a guy charged with rape and multiple sexual assaults, tax fraud, stealing classified documents, and twice-impeached for strong-arming an ally for military support and inciting an insurrection against his own country remains the top GOP candidate for 2024.

What is wrong with people?
