I started using a spreadsheet for my book outlines, so that I could estimate scene length and then use those totals to estimate total book length.
This has worked quite well on average. I do sometimes wildly over- or underestimate the length of a scene, but most times it's close, and the under/overestimates cancel out.
My very favorite part, though, is going in to update the "actual word count" when I finish a scene. I can tell how many words are left until the end!
