Cactus Forest Trail, Saguaro National Park, AZ. October 2018
Saguaro National Park is on the east side of Tucson, Arizona. It is really easy to get to from the city and I went there at sunrise to walk along the Cactus Forest Trail, which is the path at the center of the photo.

This is a nice mix of cactus and other desert plants. It certainly looks nothing like the barren desert landscapes you associate with cacti. The early evening light coming from the left adds some richness to the color of the plants.

Cactus Forest campground is northwest of Tucson Arizona. Here are some saguaro cacti in the evening light.
Thingvellir National Park, Iceland. February 2026
Thingvellir (or Þingvellir if you like thorns) is in a rift valley at the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The lake you see is Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. It had snowed the morning I was there for the first time this year and the sky was still overcast. It left the ground nice and white and the pine trees had a dusting of snow on them. (Pine trees are not native to Iceland, BTW.)
Gullfoss waterfall, Iceland
Another shot of Gullfoss waterfall in Iceland. This time I wanted to focus on all the ice that has built up on the far canyon wall. Water and mist from the river freezes on the rocks on the far side.
Hair ice. These are some very nice examples of it.

The lower falls of Gullfoss is where the Hvítá river plunges into a crevice. Here, the sunlight catches on the mist coming up from the waterfall.

Gullfoss (literally "Golden Falls") is a set of waterfalls on the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. It snowed the morning I went for the first time in over a month, so there was a little bit of snow and a little bit of slush everywhere. The lower falls drops into a narrow crevice then the river flows to the right.

One of the neat things about Shenandoah National Park in Virginia is Skyline Drive, a north-south road that roughly follows the ridge line. Along the way are dozens of turnouts that you can stop at and enjoy the view without taking a long hike.
#Shenandoah #shenandoahnationalpark #nationalparkI went for a walk after a snow storm and found that a couple of oak trees had decided to drop their acorns post-snow. Since we had a few inches of sleet on the snow the acorns stayed on top of the snow. The afternoon sun made acorn-shadows.
