Follow me concerning radical reductions of GHG emissions and consumption. Of particular interest are aviation emissions and growth in travel. I am an engineer.

For now I will mainly be active on twitter:

Good TV report showing how sea level rise is affecting the US coast. Even shows a familiar data curve from salt marshes (from the Kemp et al paper I was involved in).

I don't think this is getting the coverage it needs. Scottish government to require passivhaus standard for all new build homes. This is big. Really big. Growing out of lessons from the 70's oil crisis. Passivhaus buildings use very little energy to heat, or to cool. We've known how to do this for decades. It's gross negligence from all western governments that the same is not true of all new builds in the developed world.

@jgkoomey @jtemple this prompted me to learn more about the international legal situation wrt atmospheric pollution (Montreal, UNFCCC, and beyond). Governance is complex, but the unilateral private release of SRM chemicals is about as irresponsible as continued Govt funding of fossil fuel exploration & production #SRM #MontrealProtocol #UNFCCC #climatechange https://www.ohchr.org/sites/default/files/2022-06/Annex-SubmissionCIEL-ETC-HBF-TWN-Geoengineering-Opinion.pdf

And yes, this looks like a case of bad press release. Scientists should insist on being involved in media releases about their work, and if needed veto misleading hype.

Greenland’s Glaciers Might Be Melting 100 Times As Fast As Previously Thought - UT News

There are misleading headlines claiming „Greenland melting 100x faster“. But the study only concerns melt rates at vertical ice cliffs in contact with sea water. It has nothing to do with overall ice loss from Greenland, mostly via surface melt & calving. https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2022GL100654

Ah yes, the net zero 'get out of jail' card.

Engaging aviation workers and trade unions - Stay Grounded

Climate campaigners are coalescing around an agenda of no expansion of airports and the need for a long-term reduction of aviation. However, not all of these campaigns have incorporated worker perspectives to better understand the impact on jobs and changes to local and national economies. Jobs are one of the main industry arguments for airport […]

@amywestervelt @shawrd773

I agree with @shawrd773. QTs allow a fresh quote with context included, as well as attribution. Mastodon is flat and unsatisfying without them, both in terms of what's in my timeline and in the way that I can easily contribute. There are so many boosts in my timeline with no context, and it's really hard to get the full thread in Mastodon (a problem with how federation works) and interact with it (can't do directly from a remote original post).
