I like chemistry, bass, books, video games, and communist propaganda.

The way I've been hearing American liberal commentators speak about "Arab, Black, and Latino Voters" costing them the election, and how "stupid" and "irresponsible" non-voters are has me thinking that, in that quote about conservatives rejecting democracy, the conservatives were (not so) secretly Democrats, and Its depressing.

"If conservatives become convinced that they cannot win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy"

For the second year in a row the BBC has caught the host nation of the big annual climate change conference using it to sell fossil fuels

COP29 chief secretly filmed promoting fossil fuel deals

Undercover filming shows COP29 chief exec discussing new oil and gas projects ahead of climate summit.

"In running an opinion piece that suggests it may now be acceptable to use the term genocide about Gaza, the Guardian has admitted it has been – even according to its own resident genocide expert – complicit in obscuring that genocide for a half a year.

Remember that when editor Kath Viner comes cap in hand once again, as she did this week, begging for money from readers for her brand of supposedly “fearless, independent journalism”.

A year late, the Guardian finally permits us to use the term 'genocide'

It's not the World Court, non-western states, rights groups and Palestinians who have been using the term genocide 'too lightly'. It's the Guardian that's reached the same conclusion far, far too late

"Now is not the time..."

Weird because I recall being told "now is not the time" after these chucklefucks shit the bed in 2016 too and then literally nobody got fired for blowing a winnable election to a reality TV show fascist they purposely elevated and all those same people managed to repeat the feat 8 years later doing pretty much the exact same reactionary arrogant bullshit.

I think maybe you better make the time to talk about why this keeps happening; clearly it's important to understand

A wise strategy.

Something I think Democrats perpetually get wrong is thinking most Americans like how our government and democracy work -- or don't, as the case may be -- and thereby assume people feel motivated to defend it in the abstract.

In fact, most Americans hate it because it seems unwilling or useless at addressing their concerns while being Kafkaesque to interact with. This is especially true if you have to deal with cops, the legal system, or Republican state government.

@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes
How to tell you live in a fascist police state, an incomplete guide:

1. The state operates at least one prison where it holds dissidents indefinitely without trial (bonus points if it's located in some quasi-sovereign territory where the laws are extra murky).

2. Protestors are snatched off the street by unidentified federal agents in unmarked vans, even if they haven't broken any laws.

3. Police forces operate as paramilitary organizations, using the same weapons and equipment as the armed forces.

4. Universities have their own militarized police forces that have goddamn grenade launchers in order to brutally suppress their students.

5. The state imprisons more people than any other nation on earth and disproportionally targets and punishes specific minority groups.

6. Prisoners can be legally forced into slave labor.

To be clear I am a member of the public who is allegedly willing to pirate things and it’s totally awesome to have free access to basically all books ever published. I just wish the governments and corporations of the world would stop trying to shut down the sketchy websites I get this stuff from

Americans feel increasingly powerless because the rich and powerful can do whatever they want.

Republicans just break shit and make it legal retroactively.

The Democratic response is a Rube Goldberg machine that requires 50 years of winning every election, replacing every member of the judiciary as they retire, Congressional supermajorities, and a solar eclipse for good luck.

“The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence.”

- Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page, “Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens”

“Before her eleventh-hour decision to reverse course and ‘indefinitely pause’ a landmark plan to charge drivers higher prices for clogging up Manhattan streets, Democratic New York governor Kathy Hochul received $36,000 from lobbyists for state automobile dealers. Half of that money came from a lobbying group that opposed congestion pricing, citing ‘consequences for dealers and the thousands of people they employ.’”

Why NY Governor Kathy Hochul Killed Congestion Pricing

A historic congestion pricing plan for New York City was slated to go into effect this month. NY governor Kathy Hochul suddenly blocked it this week — and has taken tens of thousand of dollars in campaign funding from auto groups opposed to the plan.
