What would society look like if most people were autistic? - Lemmy.world
I would imagine most societies would look sort of like Germany or Japan, but the
real question is which widespread social norms are directly or indirectly caused
by endemic and widespread Neurotypical Disorder, as well as what those social
norms would be replaced by For example, I would expect the attached poster to
not exist for various obvious reasons. But how do you think an autistic society
would handle the indication of listening/attentiveness?

Need help with running Windows off my flash drive - Lemmy.world
My goal is to have a dedicated USB for running Windows with persistent storage,
so that if it would save something to the hard drive it instead saves it to the
flash drive. I do not want to dual-boot or install it. Normally I’d be able to
Google this and find my own way around. However, I don’t know what this is
called. Some people seem to be calling this a bootable USB, some people seem to
be calling it a live USB. And of course, none of the guides I’ve seen show them
using it, shutting down and unplugging it, and then demonstrating the persistent
storage on the next boot. The most I’ve gathered is that windows needs to be
packaged in a special way to run like this, but it seems unclear what that means
for me. So. What is this thing called? How have you gone about making a
bootable/live windows flash drive with persistent storage? Any direction would
be greatly appreciated
It just went back down to 1 for some reason‽

Invisible and intangible notifications‽ - Lemmy.world
To clarify, the inbox still functions. Stuff shows up in my inbox and will
disappear from unread when I mark it as read. But for most of this week the bell
has been saying I have one notification, and this morning it ticked up to two
illusory notifications
Linux taught me self-confidence - Lemmy.world
I have never considered myself to be tech-savvy. However, there is a running gag
in my immediate family where I claim to be terrible with computers (eg. “I dont
think i could find that, my google-fu is weak”) which my family responds to by
reminding me of that one time I did that one cool thing (eg. reminding me about
I nearly got suspended because I showed my Health teacher how you could bypass
our school’s firewall and buy drugs on a school computer.) This imposter
syndrome continued for a while after switching to Linux, but after having to do
a shit ton of troubleshooting I’ve stopped feeling completely clueless. I still
have no clue what I’m doing, but it’s honestly really motivating to know that
neither does anyone else—outside of the periodic Github technomancer. Linux
proved to me that I am good enough, that I can carry my own weight and solve my
own problems, and that any failures I suffer are not just fine, they are
expected!

> (picture only spiritually related to topic) Not sure if this is the best place
for this, but is there any good alternatives out there for the standard windows
office apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc) And I’m not talking about Libre
Office or OpenOffice or the other copyright-respecting ones. I’m asking for one
that will let me do everything Word/PowerPoint/Excel/Photoshop can do, but on
Linux, without running wine or dosbox. Especially all the tiny little fiddly
things they’ve copyrighted. Stg, Microsoft must have read that comic where the
Joker tried to copyright fish and thought that was a great idea.

Is this what the internet felt like? - Lemmy.world
I’ve been exploring the fediverse and subbing and posting all over the damn
place. Realizing lemmy can federate with kbin blew my mind. Not to mention the
possibility of turning my old laptop into a personal server to host my own
instance. Is this what it felt like to discover how the internet worked in the
90s?
