That's glossing over the fact Peres had a 7 point lead that was erased by a series of daily Hamas suicide bombings on Israeli buses in the days leading up to the elections. That's what gave Netanyahu his first win.
Or in other words, bloodthirsty Hamas committing deliberate atrocities against civilians fucked everything up for everyone. Just like they did this week on a crimes against humanity scale.
