That kind of community-building, non-paid labor shouldn't be underestimated. Reddit's CEO may think he can just wait out or see that there are many more average users to outweigh protestors, but he may find the impact larger than he thinks. We'll see.
While not all moderators on Reddit are perfect, my experience as one and having talked to and worked with many is that quite a few of them are simply invested in building communities, not enriching themselves, as the stereotypes would have you believe.
There are certainly parallels between folks choosing not to use Twitter actively and those subreddits who chose or are choosing going dark, but the difference is that Reddit is very much driven by a volunteer userbase of moderators.
