Theater nerd who has worked in tech/application support for 30+ years. Currently pinging between volunteering to do new things and feeling overwhelmed by trying to do new things.
@quinn The final sentence is the one that gets me: “You can’t govern if you don’t win.” We’ve spent the last fifty years building a class of politicians who win and then refuse to govern because it will harm their chances of winning again.

If this is true, it suggests that one candidate for “peak of Western civilization” was the day before Nirvana’s “Nevermind” displaced Michael Jackson at the top of the Billboard album chart.
You were many things, Kurt Cobain, but your role as a harbinger of doom has been sadly under appreciated.
@ChrisMayLA6 @cstross Weirdly enough, I have already encountered this with respect to tabletop roleplaying games.
I received an email from Modiphius, publisher of the Star Trek Adventures RPG, informing me of the policy change and asking me to ensure that any future web orders of their products are made through their US web store rather than their UK web store.
@davidgerard This helps explain why so many characters in SF set in the future still know Morse code.
@cstross @JdeB It’s also, I believe, the answer to a trivia question: What is the only aircraft with more landings than takeoffs? Since Gerald Ford was supposedly flying at the time of Nixon’s resignation of the presidency, Air Force Two became Air Force One mid-flight.
@quinn I am reminded of the time the Ferengi put a paywall on a portable Genesis Device.
@siracusa Sadly, this is incorrect, as HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) was signed into law in 1996, while COPPA (the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) was signed into law in 1998. Not a lot better, but still…

This is in fact so common, that on the same day that the UnitedHealth CEO was shot, a 17-year old was stabbed to death for saying that he didn’t speak English:

Migrant teen killed, another injured, after being asked if they spoke English: Police

The stabbing reportedly occurred after the teens said they didn't speak English.

@cstross Not convinced this would be as effective or undetectable as advertised.

1. The form factor of a pager has been fixed for years and is mainly ergonomic. As components get smaller, there’s little reason to make the device smaller, especially if that would make it harder to use. An iPhone’s form factor, on the other hand, has always been “as compact as possible”, which leaves far less room for any kind of bonus explosive device.

@cstross Leader of a horrible cult-like organization parodied in a SF book, while reading said book: “Dang, there are some good ideas here. We should start doing some of these.”
