I know this is a hot take for some people, but 99% of the time, if one asks for evidence of bigotry in any capacity in this day and age, they are just expressing they don't think Black and Brown folks still with the overwhelm9ing amount of evidence available at our fingertips, should be believed when we talk about it.

I don't want to hear about how you searched for two minutes and found nothing. I don't want to hear about how you don't see it. I don't want to hear you're 'just asking questions' because you're not.

This is the 21st century, and we are smack dab in, and information has never been more accessible.

Yes, I'm going to assume you're a lazy asshole if you ask me for evidence of bigotry on the web.
Indian grasslands are threatened because they are misunderstood as "wastelands" - a colonial category that refers to their ability to produce revenue in an 18th century land tax system but is now taken by policy makers as synonymous with "degraded" land, thus making grasslands a target not only for conversion to agriculture, but also for plantation forestry and other forms of degradation. Fixing this will require undoing colonial mindsets https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/rec.13858
No, today we must not only remember we must recognize that the US government conducted a mass slaughter of Lakota men, women, and children. They were gunned down where they stood and those that tried to run were hunted down like animals.

You will hear "Remember Wounded Knee" many times today but rememberance alone does not honor the lives lost that day.

You see, in order to remember Wounded Knee you'd have had to been told the story to forget. That is what it is to be Indigenous in America. Left to history like some sort of artifact, the true stories of the horrors not even garnering footnotes. Erased.

The dead were unceremoniously dumped into a mass grave. Twenty US soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor, medals we've asked to be rescinded to no avail.

It is hard to battle when you're a mother holding your infant close to keep them warm. It's hard to battle when you've been disarmed, are outnumbered, and have been intentionally left freezing and starving in the snow. It's hard to battle when you didn't come to fight.

The Wounded Knee massacre saw 250-300 disarmed Lakota slaughtered. Half that number were women and children.

A father found his wife dead, shot through the breast that still had their 22 day old baby suckling it, filling the child's mouth with blood rather than mother's milk. The baby died a few days later.

CW: Native genocide 🧵

Today is the anniversary of the largest mass shooting in American history, Wounded Knee, a massacre on December 29, 1890 that has been relegated to history as a "battle".

Over a month ago I submitted a complaint to Ancestry. Today I forwarded my complaint to the Chamber of Commerce because Ancestry have done nothing whatsoever about their racist description that erases & mis-named my kin. After beginning by labelling the Oldest Living Cultures in the World as property of others!
Over a month of being told sorry for the inconvenience (as if trauma is merely an inconvenience to those who experience the harm of racism!) I’ve been told ‘you’re a valuable customer’ I’ve been told ‘your complaint has been submitted to the relevant dept’. Ive been told ‘it should be fixed in the next few days’. I’ve even had assimilative descriptions of my identity used; while discussing what the official name actually is.
I’ve had one justification after another for not only why the racism is there, but also for why it remains. I’ve had so many justifications offered for why people who are not Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander have been granted the right to speak for & describe us with racism.
After over a month I have had enough of the minimising, the justifying & the outright lack of interest to not be racist!
Please, if you have an account with Ancestry complain to them (because you need an account to make a complaint at all!) Please tell them you’re not happy about their intent on remaining racist! Every voice helps!
I only did the test to help an adopted family member find family. I did not do it to be exposed to the racist ideologies of Australians!
It’s shocking how professional some of the scam calls are getting! The one I just received sounded like a computerised voice just as you’d hear when ringing a bank. This time they mentioned eBay charges & an international transaction.
Luckily for me I don’t engage those calls & instead I check my bank account. If anything my bank will chase any fraudulent charges I didn’t authorise. And there are no such charges on my accounts so I don’t have to do anything bar ignore that stupid scam!

Twitter (may she rest in peace) is increasingly losing its place as an important public square. I've been trying move towards Mastodon, but I've found that there isn't much Australian policy, and in particular mental health policy, discussed on there (that I can see).

If you're interested, I've created a sheet so you can add new Mastodon handle to it if you want to have discussions on mental health. It means others can follow you too, so add yourself if you're
interested!

I would dearly love to have more mental health policy convos on Mastodon.
