Do Not Let TPUSA on Campus
UC Davis is scheduled to host Turning Point USA founder, Charlie Kirk, on campus on March 14. Kirk and his group attacks faculty through it's "Professor Watchlist", fosters and spreads right-wing conspiracy theories, and was actively involved in the January 6 attempted coup in Washington, DC. While we believe that robust public discussion, debate, and disagreement are critical to a healthy public sphere, and within our own organization welcome a variety of viewpoints, we do not believe that our public institutions should platform voices of hate. Charlie Kirk has been a vocal leader in the recent efforts to marginalize and silence trans people; he recently stated on a podcast that trans peopole should be "took care of", "the way we used to in the 1950s and 60s". The last time TPUSA held an event on UC Davis' campus, violent "Proud Boys" from the Sacramento area and elsewhere showed up and attacked students and members of the public, while UC Davis police turned a blind eye. Student fees and tax dollars should not be used to pay for an event that serves no educational value, does nothing to further public discourse, and endangers students of color and LGBTQIA+ community members.
