I accidentally recorded a listening test at one bitrate, and then did a re-record of a few lines at a higher bit rate. Didn't figure out why it sounded different to me until after it was submitted.

Everyone I ask says they can't hear a difference. And when we broadcast it, the speakers will probably hide it anyway. So it's fine.

It's fine.

They say it's fine,
so it's fine.

I want to pull my teeth out one-by-one every time I hear the transition.

But it's fine.

I've never seen a sci-fi story about the opposite situation - a society where AIs can be depended on to do everything, so humans have no need to develop any particular skill. I'm sure someone has done this already, I just haven't come across it.

Like, even in Star Trek, AIs have incredible ability to construct content and real actual things that people need, but somehow the people in the shows are always more skilled and competent than people today are.

One of the genuine innovations of the Dune novel is the idea that by forbidding all thinking machines, the Empire of Humanity has had to build people of tremendous skill in order to do the jobs that machines used to. Mentats, Bene Gesserit, Suk doctors, and ultimately the Kwisatz Haderach were the result of humans needing to imbue individuals with incredible knowledge and skill to overcome the anti-AI handicap.

FOR SOME REASON, lately I am thinking a lot about the mirror case.

Happy new year from Hachioji!
I bought myself a moka pot this Christmas and for the first time in my life I understand how it is that people can just sit and enjoy coffee for its own sake.

Today I woke up to my phone telling me it was snowing. By which it meant that somewhere a robotic eye turned toward the sky, saw a single snowflake over Hachioji, and reported it to Google with the same breathless enthusiasm I used to report snow to parents and teachers when I was 8.

It's too bad it's not actually snowing, but it's nice to have proper winter weather. On Saturday I did a cycling trip in a t-shirt with no jacket and was just fine. Which is comfortable but weird.

I had a dream that contractors started a new business model where they bring a dog or cat from an animal shelter to every private home booking, so as to distract nosey busy-bodies like myself who would pretend we know more about DIY than we actually do and get in their way by trying to watch everything. They give us an animal that needs socialization to play with instead.

There are probably a million reasons a business like this would never work.

But what if it did!

Some people have life ambitions about acquiring some thing, meeting some famous person, or striving to overcome some physical boundary.

Me, I just want to use the word 'dioscuric' appropriately and spontaneously in a conversation where we're not actually talking about divine twins, but where it would sound clever to reference them.

And then I can crumble to dust on the spot and be devoured by vermin, my purpose completed.

I am, and I can't stress this enough, so fucking tired.
