Interesting. I would not correlate Conservatism in the UK with religiosity, nor indeed personal responsibility.

All animals are amazing, and I also absolutely understand why some people choose to not live with (one or more) critters.

Even small dogs don't clean up after themselves like cats do.
You can also go away for the weekend and get someone to pop in fill the bowl once; the cats will barely notice their human servants have rotated.
Cats are indubitably more easily accommodated for in a wide range of lifestyles and situations.
They are also, arguably, less rewarding.
I love all of our pets, but wouldn't /didn't have a dog living in one of the inner suburbs (like those mentioned in this article, funnily enough)
