In 1977 Pharoah played an amazing concert on the Jazz Middelheim festival (Antwerp, BE). The music has been released recently. This Saturday on the same festival, we'll play music from the same repertoire. Two members of the original band with 4 guests, including me on tenor saxophone. Feels kinda crazy knowing that Pharoah should be standing there instead of me.

!!Antwerp!! A new album is in the making. We're so glad to have found a good place to present it live in Antwerp.
More then a decade after our first Ragini Trio album we were so curious how the trio would sound, because we've been developing individually throughout these years. We constructed a new repertoire that facilitates our joy of playing together to the max. You'll see it then and there, can't wait!!!

It’s impossible to describe a raga completely with theory. You can intellectualise it but only to a certain extend which doesn’t yet grasp the essence, but the beauty is that you can feel it whether you are a musician or not. You just need two ears and a beating heart.
To me 1, b3 and 4 feel like the basis that gives stability to the mode while b6 adds a very distinctive special color. The 7th gives me the most drama, melancholy or joy depending on my own current state of being I guess 🙂 This is a simplification because actually it’s not the notes or the scale that does all this but it’s the specific well thought of sequence of specific phrases that do the trick. That’s why a raga is not a scale but something more complex and ultimately inexplicable.
For the geeks, chandrakauns is a fantastic raga. The raga uses the following scale: 1, b3, 4, b6 ,7. So pentatonic and without the 5th which by the way never happens in traditional occidental music if I'm not mistaken. In fact the tampura who plays the drone is tuned for this raga to tonic and 4th, instead of the usual tonic and 5th.

Ranjani & Gayatri are two sisters singing Carnatic music. They are coming to play a concert in Gent in October which I don’t wanna miss. Experiencing this style of music in a live setting is much more powerful than listening to a recording. Regarding the intensity, I assume that what you see and hear in the video is the last part of a concert.
