Alright, buddy secured our Dicks tickets. Last time I went, I saw a bunch of Masto people - hoping to do the same this year.
Dave Harrington was playing a free show tonight. Two sets of improvised Jazz in the round. 10 minutes from my office. But... I didn’t have work today and didn’t feel like driving an hour in the rain to get to the show. Bummed to miss it, but just didn’t have it in me.

This is an absolutely satisfying result in a Texas state race between some union guy and one of the architects of the hellish and repressive social agenda that makes good-hearted people shudder at the words "school board". Read the article and rejoice in the hope that bad actors like Ken Paxton, Greg Abbott, and Ted Cruz will soon be in our rear view mirror.

It also is a stupendous first volley for the Democrats in the midterms proper.

Taking my daughters to their elementary school’s “Masquerade Ball” tonight. I wonder percentage of the parents there will be high.

Phish will almost certainly make a statement. Something like It’s ICE>Everything’s Right

Bluesky Social

Saw my first show of 2026 last night. Antibalas at the Lodge Room. I think I got the Talkatif CD in 2001, so I’ve been listening to this band for like 25 years, but this was my first time seeing them.

It was even better than I expected and my expectations were pretty high. Killer, massive rhythm section and their horns are just so damn good. A non-stop dance party! Fantastic energy in the room. And it was nice to see a band that doesn’t subscribe to the “Republicans buy concert tickets too” ethos. They started the show by talking about how Americans are being disappeared by our government, led a call and response “Fuck ICE” cheer, and did their best to give hope and inspire resistance. After the start of 2026, it was exactly what I needed.

I never got to see Jerry. But I saw The Dead (or whatever they were calling themselves) my freshman year of college. I went on to see Bobby in basically every post-Jerry iteration of The Dead. He was never my favorite member, but I saw him more than any other. And at some point, I grew to really love him. 25+ years of seeing him live were a treat. Sad I won’t get to see him again.

Here's my latest livemusic write-up, "Journey vs Destination" on jamming from Phish and SML and others. Enjoy!
