Investigation finds decades of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Rhode Island

A new report says Rhode Island Catholic clergy abused hundreds of children for decades, while church leaders minimized the scandal. On Wednesday, Attorney General Peter Neronha released the report after a multiyear review. The report says at least 75 clergy molested more than 300 victims since 1950. Neronha says church officials agreed to hand over records, but did not allow key people to be interviewed. The diocese, in response, says the report reflects its cooperation but misleads the public into thinking the problems are ongoing. Three current or former priests charged with sexual abuse during the review are awaiting trial.

A French court has convicted Marine Le Pen of embezzlement and barred her from seeking public office for five years — a hammer blow to the far-right leader’s presidential hopes and an earthquake for French politics. Le Pen has denounced the verdict as a “political” move aimed at preventing her from running in the 2027 presidential election and said that millions of French people “are outraged.” She described the ruling as a violation of the rule of law, said she would appeal and asked that the court proceedings take place before the 2027 campaign. CDC tells about 180 fired employees to come back to work

The nation’s top public health agency says about 180 employees who were laid off two weeks ago can come back to work. Emails went out Tuesday to some Centers for Disease Control and Prevention probationary employees who got termination notices last month. A message seen by the AP was sent with the subject line, “Read this e-mail immediately.” It said that a Feb. 15 termination notice has been rescinded. It’s not clear how many people returned to work Wednesday. And it’s also unclear whether the employees would be spared from widespread job cuts that are expected soon across government agencies.
