@andy Agreed relying on people to #hashtag will never be reliable. Easy to see Mastodon servers generating tags based on content, users opting in/out of that. It’s what the commercial networks do, although without user choice. Better #ContentDiscovery is going to be an amazing area for Mastodon.

@andy Struggling with this as well. I’m trying to decide between your instance and sdf.org. I’m not looking for a tech-focused instance because tech isn’t the main reason I’m on social media. Rather, I’m thinking of going large or going Seattle-specific. Does following hashtags only pull from the local feed, or also the federated feed?

There is an effort underway to reframe work that attempts to address harmful disinformation — even work specifically aimed at mitigating malign foreign disinformation — as "censorship". If we accept that frame, we will enable the dismantling of the very nascent defenses that we've built over the past ~6 years, as our society has begun to realize the vulnerabilities that emerge from the intersection of technology, human behavior, and influence operations.

So here's the thing. You can only violate people's legal rights and your own word so far before they lawyer up and come after you.

I really do hope Musk changes his mind and does the right thing - the employees deserve that. But it'll be fun as hell if he doesn't.
