At our homes it's also typically unisex :)

You know the mere exposure effect? It basically says that being familiar with something even if they don't like it, that familiarity breeds sympathy. Or plainly, any publicity is good publicity. It's a commonly used trick in marketing. I try to remind myself that though what you're describing is annoying, I still had some role in inspiring them. By being friends with a "radical" like me they're less likely to have prejudices about it, and they know who to talk to once they figure out themselves.
Yep. It's important to distinguish people from ideas.
"You do not need to be ultra-private" is right. People sometimes say "oh but they have my data already" because they don't understand that there's always more data to collect and small acts matter already. Data privacy is like washing hands. Skipping it once won't kill you, but every time you do it, you get a little more safe.
The more I think about it, the more confusing public Transport in Germany is. Visitors often ask me which is the Straßenbahn and which the S-Bahn. And also what the difference between S- and U-Bahn is. To which my response is: The U-Bahn is underground, except when it isn't and the S-Bahn is above ground, except when it isn't.
