@deweyritten hope im not straying into mansplainville: a governor is a technical control applied to a device which limits its power output. often seen on motorcyles, golf carts, e-bikes, to limit operation to a safe speed.
i was thinking about this after an excellent piece by @TheWarOnCars on muscle car culture and how manufacturers are selling us giant death machines.
in the infosec world it is common that we apply technical controls to keep user behavior within safe boundaries- why not cars?
imagine if, instead of surveillance cameras and automatic citation systems, we used tech to make streets safe? A transmitter on light poles broadcasting the speed limit, which in turn is received by your car, for instance. The car then adjusts its governor to the maximum allowable limit.
instead, we have built a system where speed limits are on the honor system, people are getting killed, and traffic policing is a revenue source. all so we can sell 700hp monsters to whoever can qualify for the payment.
