U.S. lawmakers have left a proposal to make the federal judiciary's PACER online court records system free out of a sprawling, $1.66 trillion spending measure <a href="/world/us/us-congress-advance-17-trillion-govt-funding-bill-2022-12-20/">unveiled on Tuesday</a>, a setback for advocates as the current Congress nears its end.
Legal processes at the state and federal level can be used to ensure that those who engage in insurrection do not serve in public office. The January 6 Select Committee can aid these efforts by offering some key findings in its final report.
The referrals go to DOJ, who can either open a new case, add them to existing cases (or reject them), with a view to bringing an eventual indictment and prosecution if, in their view, the evidence is likely to lead to a guilty verdict.
The insurrection case is separately interesting: it is a plausible 14A Section 3 hook for barring DJT from office directly; the exact requirements for invoking it aren't clear, and will prob be litigated based on this referral whether or not an indictment occurs
