On this day – Jan. 28th – in 1916, President Wilson nominated the great Louis Brandeis to a seat on the Supreme Court.

According to the Times, the nomination was a "complete surprise to the country."

He was ultimately confirmed in June and served until his retirement in 1939.

Ocho kandelas para mi . . .

Oh Edwin Stanton . . .

He was Secretary of War under Lincoln (and uttered those famous, if disputed, words upon Lincoln's death – "Now he belongs to the ages").

Stanton died himself on this day in 1869, having just been confirmed to the Court, but before he could take his seat.

Happy Birthday to this Great American – the one and only José A. Cabranes of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals (and my beloved former boss). ❤️

“This will be President Biden’s twenty-eighth round of nominees for federal judicial positions, bringing the number of announced federal judicial nominees to 150.”

Happy Justice Stevens Day to all who celebrate!

On this day - November 28th - in 1975, President Gerald Ford nominated John Paul Stevens to the Supreme Court.

Justice Stevens would serve on the Court until his retirement in 2010.

Loved talking to Laura Kusisto about the impact of the Democrats holding the Senate on judicial nominations over the next two years . . . ⤵️

Thankful for friends who feel like family . . .

Family who really are friends . . .

And these two most of all.

Thankfully reason (and a ❤️ of architecture) prevailed.

The Tweed 🏛️ eventually underwent a substantial renovation (even the stairs were restored!).

NYC Mayor Koch declared it “probably one of the top 10 architectural gems of city buildings.”

We’ll probably take it. 😉

. . . the drama wasn't over for the courthouse just yet.

It was not properly cared for and suffered many an indignity. In the 1950s, the marvelous steps along Chambers Street were removed, requiring visitors to enter through the basement!

(Oh the abasement - literally!)
