Microsoft are then storing this data in the US where it can be examined by US authorities.
This is against the GDPR.
It seems to me that an interesting evolution of mastodon would be to incorporate aliases more closely, so that the toot appears to come from the alias.
Of course there are some abuse vectors here, but it may be possible to mitigate these by combining aliases with verification in some way?
So, it appears that, as Mastodon uses Webfinger, it is possible to create a top-level alias that resolves to your actual instance-specific ID.
I wonder how integrated this is with Mastodon. Could I, for instance, tell my current server that I'm changing to a new server and give it the alias instead of the new address?
Of course, in all toots, it will be the local server address that shows up, so organic follows will be to that address.
