I have friends in older generations who were with the State Department. Retired, now, but former US Cold War diplomats during the 1970s and 1980s. I’ve had dinner with the State Department’s go-to expert on the Italian Red Brigade communist insurgency.

They and their peers are discussing what a coup might look like in the US.

Not because they want one, but because the State Department’s job is to plan for ‘What If…’, and once you do that for 50 years, you don’t just stop.

The model they hope for is the Portuguese Carnation Revolution., but they are not uniformly optimistic.
