@matt I don't mean to be aggressive btw! I just genuinely both see no proof that the main issue of "writing code isn't the hard part" and "reviewing code you didn't write is harder then code you did write" has actually been solved. That, plus, I guess I actually like and enjoy programming.
@matt it's genuinely the most depressing thing I have ever heard and I don't know why I would want to deskill myself like that.
Everything around these tools just feels like a haze where people just randomly gave up about the misleading tool. Like the conversation has been that we can't measure the output of these tools, and even financial analysts are still pointing out there has been next to no actual productivity gains in the industry from this.
I don't know how people think that humans are able to actually gauge anything from a tool that very accurately imitates a person and generates too much content to actually be critical of beyond "wow it did a thing". I literally wouldn't trust myself to use an LLM and come back with any reasonable assertion of being more or less productive. Because it's obviously going to make me feel productive when I see a bunch of code getting dropped in my lap, even if that's not actually helping me.
@matt a year ago people said the same thing about LLMs, same with a year before that. During this time, I've still seen many people repeatedly reach the conclusion that they felt more productive then the LLM actually made them. On top of the fact that the output from LLMs I see is still regularly unreliable.
This is a big reason I keep telling people that personal experience with an LLM doesn't tell you anything. Getting a bunch of code that "looks right" doesn't mean it's saving you time. And generating a bunch of code was never the hard part of this job. On top of the fact that people keep showing me examples in duct typed languages which is like, yeah, of course it looks like it can write code it doesn't need to understand anything that's happening to do so.
I also just, don't get this. Why would we subject ourselves to this? Is the idea of your entire job being turned into supervising a machine that does pretty horrendous work that you have to prompt gamble with not terrifying?
@catgoat it's getting harder when I am seeing people actively deskill themselves who I've regarded very highly :/.
how am I supposed to not be angry at this? how am I not supposed to feel like I am seeing my life's work forcibly taken from me so some sociopath can make a quick buck? how am I not supposed to worry just about every single moment that this won't get worse? how am I even supposed to look at "mild" uses of this and not just think about how a year ago, when AI was basically the same as it is right now, so many of these same people wouldn't have even looked at these tools. nothing even changed but people are suddenly pretending like they work now
I don't think people appreciate just how deeply these tools affect a lot of us. Like, working in this industry was a dream for some of us. Getting to write code that helps people own their devices was my dream.
Like what else is there now? How long do I get to live this dream now? Is it already over?
I'll be honest I've definitely been really struggling this last week trying to figure out how to keep moving forward while trying to figure out how to tune out deskillers and it's getting hard man. I've never felt anxiety and this strong of a sense of dread for the industry I work in before. Genuinely feels like something I worked for years to be a part of and to be proud of got shitty the moment I finally started getting past my burnout.
If y'all are opposed to mesa allowing AI code mind hitting me up so I can actually gauge how many people are against this
@karolherbst Not only that, people notice. I've had people in furry chats literally all over the fucking place talking about systemd introducing claude code reviews.
People keep pretending this shit is seen as professional, but actual real people are looking at this and starting to lose trust.
